New Delhi, Jan. 19, 2017: On 18th and 19th Jan. 2016, a group of children volunteers and two teachers – Ms. Renu Nagpal & Ms. Sapna Sondhi visited the Vasant Valley School for ‘Special Olympics Bharat’. There was a Football match and many recreational outdoor games conducted for the children with intellectual disabilities. Students from Apeejay School, Pitampura were the volunteers for helping. International Director, Mrs Aruna Abhey Oswal, Lions Club International toured through the programme, engaging with the athletes, youth leaders & the coaches. The Heads of Special Olympics from Asia Pacific Region and Eurasia had also come for the event. The other guests of honour were Air Marshal Denzel Keelor, Founder & CEO Special Olympics Bharat, Dr. Neville Mehta, Ms. Rebecca Taou and MJF Lion Umesh Gandhi.
Lions Club International and Special Olympics have had a long association, and this sport was organised by them. The students of Apeejay School, Pitampura have since long been a part of these events and have always volunteered to help the children with intellectual disabilities. It teaches them not only to become more tolerant, but more appreciative, and perceptive. It helps them to understand that they are the youth leaders and are capable of bringing change. It inspires them to ‘never give up’.
