New Delhi, September 23, 2014: On the day of Autumn Equinox i.e. 23rd September 2104, students of the Astronomy Club of the School measured the circumference of the earth. Around 100 students conducted the activity based on the measurements done by Eratosthenes around 2000 years back. The students were guided by ten student trainers who had earlier been trained by SPACE, under the supervision of Mrs. Sarita Sharma. The students first found the local noon which gave us the shortest shadow with the help of which we measured the sun angle or ‘theta’. The students used the formula- C= (360xD)/Ɵ, to find the circumference of the earth. The accuracy rates were around 96%.
