New Delhi, Dec. 19, 2016: Students of Space Club attended a session on the topic ‘Grid in the Sky: Celestial Coordinate System creating a Sky Map’. The session started with the introduction of ‘Astronomer’s Tool’. Students were divided in groups to make them understand the grid of latitude & longitude of the Earth to locate any place on Earth. Similarly, they were explained same kind of grid in the space to understand the celestial sphere. Purpose of this activity was:
- To understand the concept of coordinates in our celestial sphere
- To identify reference techniques to locate objects in space
- To create a celestial grid & a sky map
Students constructed a sky map for both the hemispheres (North & South) based on the understanding of the celestial grid. It was a very interesting & thought-provoking session.
