Apeejay School, Nerul, hosted the 1st Inter-School Apeejay Model United Nations (AMUN). The conference was held from 19th to 20th October, 2016, at ‘Three Star Hotel, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.
The concept of Model United Nations (MUN) is to have students of all ages actively participate in a simulated version of the United Nations. It is a forum where students act as representatives of their appointed country and gives the students an opportunity to showcase their unique talents.
What is a MUN?
Model United Nations or a MUN is an extra-curricular activity in which students play the role of delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees.
The delegates get to represent member-states of the United Nations or unique characters as they face either preplanned topics or unpredictable crises–both of which test their skills in diplomacy.
It involves researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, as well as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
- A MUN allows you to understand how international bodies work and how one can solve some of the challenges that affect our planet today.
- It develops your skills and talents, which include the gift of the gab, having a quick wit, being able to formulate plans of action under pressure, and being able to come to a workable compromise.
Preparing for a Model United Nations conference entails research on three levels: the procedure and structure of the conference, the topic of the committee to which the delegate belongs, and the position of the country being represented.
- Each delegate is assigned to a certain committee and represents a certain country within it. Each committee has a specific topic that will be deliberated during the course of the conference.
- Delegates have to prepare a Position Paper, which summarizes their country's stand on the issue being discussed. Delegates can submit their position papers to their committee Director on the committee email id.
AMUN 2016 will be a simulation of four Committees: Historic Security Council (HSC), European Union (EU), Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). The basic focus is for students to research political positions of nations and global areas of conflict to gain a better understanding of the world through it.
