Apeejay Stya & Svran Group Organises IOG Dr. Stya Paul Awards 2015

New Delhi, October 31, 2015: The Apeejay Stya & Svran Group organised the Indian Obstetrics and Gynaecology (IOG) Dr. Stya Paul Awards 2015 at the Apeejay Campus, Sheikh Sarai, New Delhi, on 31st October 2015. The occasion witnessed a galaxy of esteemed doctors and dignitaries from across the country. The IOG Dr. Stya Paul Awards have been instituted to recognise outstanding body of academic and scientific quest in the domain of Gynaecology & Obstetrics.

Commemorating the legacy of Dr. Stya Paul, a great visionary and philanthropist, who championed the cause of women empowerment and child development in the country throughout his life, an Oration Lecture by Professor Ian Fraser was organised on the very relevant topic of 'Current Trends in the Medical Management of Endometriosis'. Professor Ian Fraser was previously a Professor in Reproductive Medicine, University of Sydney and Subspecialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. He is a Past-President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), and Past-Honorary Secretary of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO). He has published over 450 peer-reviewed papers in his on-going research career.

It is estimated that approximately 26 million Indian women between the ages of 18 and 35 are afflicted by this disease and as much as upto 50% of women are affected in terms of their fertility due to endometriosis. Despite its increasing prevalence, it is not discussed to that great extent and should be addressed in various clinical meetings & research summits. The Oration Lecture on Endometriosis will go a long way in shedding light on the myriad aspects of this medical condition and its treatment.

Mrs. Sushma Paul Berlia, Co-Promoter & President, Apeejay Stya & Svran Group, opined, "Endometriosis affects one in 10 women of childbearing age, working women and older women. The concern is primarily about pain management and fertility treatment. It is of grave concern, especially in India wherein the society expects women to be fertile."

Professor Ian Fraser said, "There is an unmet need for therapeutic approaches in the management of endometriosis. Exciting novel approaches including progestogens are being evaluated and are soon to be available to the medical fraternity."

A luminary in the field of Gynaecology, Professor Ian Fraser is the co-chair of the FIGO Menstrual Disorders Committee. He is an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO 2002) and has a Doctorate of Science from Edinburgh University. He has held high scientific advisory positions on contraception with the WHO and the Population Council, New York. Professor Ian Fraser broadly shared his expertise and views about the current trends in the medical management of endometriosis and how hopefully we can better manage the patients. Prof. Fraser referred to it as the 'enigmatic disease', further explaining it to be a mystery disease inspite of much research in the Western world. Referring to the treatment of this 'extraordinarily variable condition', Prof. Fraser shared, "Individualisation of management and sometimes ''observation' only alongside other treatments like effective analgesia can be of much help".

The illuminating and enriching event of the IOG awards proved to be a great networking platform for doctors and practitioners wherein they shared their knowledge & experiences with delegates present on the occasion.
