Recent Events & HAPPENINGS
'Sehwag Surprise' at Apeejay School, Sheikh Sarai Students
of Apeejay School, Sheikh Sarai had an exhilarating experience of
welcoming distinguished cricketer, Mr. Virender Sehwag, to their school.
School Principal Mrs. Sarita Manuja extended a warm welcome to the
ace batsman in the school auditorium and spoke of his dynamic personality
and myriad achievements. She exhorted the players of the school to
prove their mettle to rise to the International levels of achievement.
In his address to the students Mr. Sehwag urged students to excel
in academics as it was the basis of success and to aim for the best
along with developing their sports activity. He then watched a cricket
match played by the school team and gave his autograph to students.
The CBSE INTEL Science Exhibit Competition was held at Apeejay
School Pitampura on the 16th September 2006. Schools from the northern
states and a few form UAE had participated in this competition. The
models were to be presented under the topics Environmental Management,
Industrial Development and Mathematical models. Our school has presented
two projects 'The power of grey water' and 'Enlightened Fan'. Out
of 225 models presented by 129 schools, our school was been short
listed a one among the 15 schools to be participating at the National
Level Contest. The model was prepared by Nikhil Bhatia and Nakul Luthra
of class XI.
E-School Apeejay School, Sheikh Sarai recently organised
a seminar on 'Role of ICT in Leadership Development' initiating the
concept of e-learning in schools. Total Learning Services Ltd. (TLSL)
provide an internet/internet based model for merging Information and
Communication Technology and other multimedia resources with learning
and teaching process in schools. The flexible features include secure
portal access for students to attend and participate in live, real
time a virtual class discussions, lectures and activities.
Our commitment to social cause The school is deeply committed
to social causes and has embarked on a number of projects. Although
all these are detailed in annexure –5, the
following need a special mention.
Free education to students from Economically Weaker Section. The school is committed to fully implement The Directorate of Education programme of reserving 20% seats and granting free education to students from economically weaker section of the society. Presently we have eight students in this category who receive a total educational support, which includes uniforms and textbooks from the school. The process of admission of more students in this category for the year 2005-2006 is in progress.
Project Naman: ‘NAMAN’ in Hindi means namaskar and is a project initiated to serve the cause of senior citizens. About 150 students of classes IX and XI have volunteered to visit 49 identified families of senior citizens in the neighbourhood on a weekly basis. These students share the joys and sorrows of these families and have adopted them as foster grandparents. These ‘foster grandparents’ are invited to the school on every occasion and celebration and have become part of the extended school family. Delhi Police invited our students to the celebrations of Delhi Police Week in the IIT auditorium. The Vice Principal addressed the audience and the report on student’s efforts in project NAMAN was highly appreciated and applauded.
Tsunami Relief: The students and staff of our school contributed Rs. 4, 50, 000 towards Prime Minister’s Tsunami Relief Fund. Two hundred students from our school were invited by the Hon’ble Minister for Sports and Youth affairs Mr. Sunil Dutt on the occasion of ‘Youth Awakening Day’ on January 12, 2005 and pledged their whole hearted support to their unfortunate brethren. Our school students presented a patriotic song on the occasion . Environment Awareness: Apeejay School, Sheikh Sarai, has launched some novel programmes in the school with a view to creating better environmental awareness among students. A Meteorological Information Centre has been set up at the school. The Weather data recorded by students is displayed on a Meteorological Information Board for all students to read.
A Bird-table has been set up in one corner of the school’s lush green lawns. Adequately supplied with grains, and a bowl full of water, it has started attracting birds of all colours and hues, and it is a great experience to watch our feathered friends. Students are encouraged to watch, identify, and learn biological names of these birds. A special board displaying information about different bird species has been set up.
Know the plants: Another interesting and educational project launched at the school is that of identifying and labelling all plants and trees growing on the school campus. Most plants and trees now display a white identification plate bearing the vernacular and botanical name of the plant. Students are taken around the school on a nature walk and learn such details about the plants growing on the campus. So now a mango tree is “Mangifera- Indica”.
As part of our efforts to be eco friendly an aptly named project “Surya Namaskar” will be launched soon with a view to teach and demonstrate as to how the power of sun can be harnessed and transformed into and stored as electrical energy. We are sure these projects will have the desired effect and bring freshness in the way students perceive and relate to their environment.
