WE CARE FILM FESTIVAL- ENABLING THE DISABLED
9th February 2010 - The sky was overcast with heavy clouds waiting patiently to pour down their store of rain. Drops of water had begun to trickle down everybody’s faces as they made their way into the conference hall. The LCD screen glittered with a peculiar writing- “We Care-Celebrating Diversity”. It seemed as if it’s going to be another session laden with facts and figures that takes a heavy toll on student’s minds. However, what happened next was a complete marvel.
Its generally known that festivals are a platform to showcase talent but it was on this day that it was understood that film festivals are also opportunity to gather public opinion on various issues in an extremely creative manner. We care, headed by Mr. Satish Kapoor, is a film festival which uses films as a medium to initiate discussions and dialogue for the integration of people with disabilities into the mainstream of society.
The fest was divided into four categories on the basis of time duration- each consisting of films ranging from 1 minute to 1 hour. There were 32 documentaries in total which focused on various myths, misconceptions, prejudices and stereotypes associated with the disabled section of the society. Subjects ranging from visual impairment and multiple disabilities to autism and cerebral palsy were elaborated upon.
The event was blessed with presence of Ms Dilshad Master- CEO of Ikriti New Media as chief guest She was welcomed by Dr. Ashok Ogra, Director of AIMC who then formally inaugurated the function. She , an ardent film lover, thoroughly enjoyed the festival.
Discussions also ensued on what actually constituted the words like ‘disabled’, ‘challenged’ and’ impaired’ which is so easily intermixed and overlooked. It was generally concluded that disability is in the minds of people who consider the physically or mentally challenged people any less.
The films thereon were watched with a lot of concentration and an eye for detail.Students also got to interact and learn from some of the creators of the short films Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and vowed to be ready with their own short films next year which reflects the cause of the “differently able”.
As the clock struck five, it was time to wind up for the day. The audience, even after having watched 32 back-to-back documentaries was left craving for more. Huge roars of approval went up the air for Mr. Kapoor and the We Care intiative.
